Editorial standards
These are the rules every essay on The African Risk Lens follows.
- Every essay starts from a real, recent event and says when it happened. A new article about an old case does not make the case new.
- I read the primary material, such as regulators’ publications, court records, operators’ statements, audit reports and official findings, and list it at the end of each essay with publication and retrieval dates.
- I keep facts, official findings, allegations and my own interpretation separate, and say which is which. An operator’s account is reported as the operator’s account.
- I do not infer misconduct, ignored warnings or poor culture from an incident, or good governance from a success.
- I say where a comparison stops applying, and I do not treat one country’s rules as requirements elsewhere.
- I do not write about my employer, its customers or counterparties, or any matter I have handled.
Corrections
When I get something wrong, I correct it in the essay and add a dated note at the end explaining what changed.
